Highly Accelerated Life Testing is becoming more and more accepted as the means of shortening the time and reducing the cost of product testing. This can result in a more robust and reliable product brought to market earlier.
Employing vibration and temperature transitions, products are tested to the point of failure. Rapid temperature transitions are achievable; 60C per minute is possible. These result in expansion and contraction forces which, combined with random vibration help quickly identify a product's weak points. Subsequent analysis of the failure mode can prompt design changes to reduce or overcome the likely incidence of the fault occurring within the normal operating environment of the product. In HASS - Highly Accelerated Stress Screen, similar tests can be used to reveal weaknesses that are due to manufacturing processes. Published studies on HALT chamber use claim that field failures of products within the first year of use have dropped from >10% to less than 1%. |
